Portbou, Sixty Years Later

In September 2000, on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Walter Benjamin's death in Portbou, Barcelona hosted an International Conference dedicated to the German-Jewish thinker. The reportage, produced for Israeli television, follows the train journey organised for the conference — from Barcelona to Portbou and back — turning the route into a space of shared reflection with participants including Dani Karavan, Stéphane Hessel, Stéphane Mosès and Federico Mayor Zaragoza.

Without knowing it at the time, that journey was the starting point of our first feature-length documentary, Who Killed Walter Benjamin…, released five years later.
